Trigger Links

Overview

Trigger links are a powerful tool that allows you to redirect users to specific pages after they click on links within SMS messages, emails, or Facebook/Instagram DMs.

When a user clicks on a trigger link, the system automatically records this activity in the contact's timeline and can initiate predefined actions within your workflows. The workflow builder includes both actions and triggers that activate when a contact clicks on a trigger link.

Important: Trigger links are supported in SMS, Email, and FB/IG DMs ONLY.

Key Use Cases:

Dynamic URL Updates in Email Campaigns

Use trigger links to dynamically update URLs in your email campaigns without manually editing each message. This is particularly useful for recurring promotions where you want to reuse the same email template.

Example: If you run monthly or quarterly promotions, set up a trigger link with a custom value that points to your current promotion URL. When contacts click the link, they're automatically directed to the latest promotion page, allowing you to reuse your email template efficiently.

Step 1: Create a custom value with a redirecting link as a value.

Step 2: Copy the custom value

Step 3: Create a Trigger Link under Marketing with custom value copied previously

When using this trigger link repeatedly in workflows & campaigns, we're able to update the custom value with a different link without making any changes to workflows/campaigns.

URL changes will not retroactively affect previous campaigns.
Always place the trigger link (not the custom value) in your message body to ensure proper functionality.

The custom value serves as the destination URL, while the trigger link is what contacts actually click.

Workflow Automation Based on Clicks

Create automated workflows that respond to trigger link interactions to streamline your communication processes.

Example: Set up an appointment confirmation workflow where clicking a trigger link in a reminder email automatically triggers the next step, such as sending a survey or review request.

Channel-Specific Unsubscribe Links

Implement unsubscribe trigger links for different communication channels to ensure compliance with opt-out regulations and manage communication preferences effectively.

Supported Channels:

Email

Facebook Messages

Instagram Messages

When contacts click these unsubscribe links, they're automatically removed from the respective communication channel.

Step 1: Under MarketingTrigger Links -- Create a unique trigger link for each communication channel

Step 2.

Build a workflow:
Trigger: Trigger Link Clicked
Action: Enable DND

SMS Unsubscribe

By default the SMS carriers have prebuilt opt-out keywords like ['STOP', 'STOPALL', 'UNSUBSCRIBE', 'CANCEL', 'END', 'QUIT']. When these keywords are used the lead/ contact will automatically be unsubscribed and this will be handled by the system.

To opt back-in the lead/ contact will need to respond "Start".

Contact Activity Tracking

Monitor contact engagement and behavior by tracking trigger link clicks in your SMS and email campaigns. All click activity is recorded in the contact's activity timeline, providing valuable insights into campaign effectiveness and user behavior.

Educational Resource Distribution

Embed trigger links in your campaigns to provide educational content and track interest in specific topics.

Example: Include links to tutorials, how-to videos, or product articles. Clicking these links can trigger automated follow-up sequences or help you identify contacts interested in particular subjects.

Event Registration and Management

Streamline event management by using trigger links in email invitations for RSVP tracking and automated attendee communication.

Example: When recipients click a trigger link to RSVP, the system can automatically confirm attendance, send event details, or collect additional information.

Workflow Example:

Scenario: Create a workflow that sends a follow-up email to contacts who click on a promotional link.

Configuration:

Workflow Trigger Name: "Promo Link Engagement Follow-up"

Trigger link: "Spring Sale Promo" (Only clicks on this specific link will trigger the workflow)

Workflow Steps:

Trigger: Trigger Link Clicked (configured as above)
Action: Send Email - Send a follow-up email thanking the contact for their interest and offering a special discount

Action: Update Contact - Tag the contact as "Interested in Promo" to segment these users for future promotional campaigns
Action: Add task for team member to check & follow up

Best Practices:

Test Links: Always test trigger links before launching campaigns to ensure proper functionality

Clear Labeling: Use descriptive names for your trigger links to maintain organization

Monitor Activity: Regularly review the activity timeline to assess engagement and campaign performance

Compliance: Ensure all unsubscribe mechanisms comply with relevant regulations (CAN-SPAM, GDPR, etc.)

Documentation: Keep records of your trigger link setups for future reference and troubleshooting

Using Trigger Links in Workflows

The Trigger Link Clicked trigger initiates a workflow whenever a specific trigger link is clicked by a contact. This feature is ideal for tracking link engagement and automating subsequent actions based on user interactions with predefined links.
